Route

My planned route is not really detailed yet, because I don’t want to plan 6 months ahead, but spontanious. The weather, my Motivation and the experiences of oter travelers will affect my route. Of course it is necessary to prepare by reading travelguides and set up some goals I want to reach. My overall goal ist “just” to ride through the Andes from the most southern point in Tierre del Fuego to Quito, Equador in the North. After reading a lot of travelblogs and reports on Crazymanonabike my route probably will be following:

Start will be the southest city of the world, Ushuaia, which is located in the Argentinean province Tierre del Fuego.  The Antarctic is only 1200 km away! I will ride through Patagonia on the Ruta 40 and pass some famous places of interests, such as the National park Torres del Paine, Perito Moreno Glacier or the Fritz Roy Mountain. After crossing the border to Chile my route will take me onto the Carretera Austral, which brings a variety of landscapes with it. After 1200 km on gravel and passing very remote areas it will take  me to Puerto Montt.

I haven’t decided yet, where it is going next. Either I will ride over the Andes to Argentina and continuing the trip on the Routa 40 to Mendoza, or I will stay on the west side of the Andes (Chilenian Side) and cycle to Santiage. It is also possible that I will skip that part by taking the bus. Cycling over 1000 km (Ruta 5) on an expanded Highway  is not exactly brilliant…The seascape in the north of Puerto Montt shall be very beautiful and therefore it is a must see! Did I choose the way to Mendosa, it would be the time for crossing the Andes to reach Santiago.

Thence I will cycle in the direction of Antofagsta, whereat I haven’t thought about any route for this section. From Antofagsta I want to cycle to Bolivia. There are certain possible Andenpasses, which I can chosse from. Numerious lagoons are waiting in Bolivia, and not to forget the famous Salar de Uyuni. If I am lucky I will be able to cycle Salar de Uyuni, but probably it is not dry enough at the time I will be there. The next 1100 km are between 3000 and 4000 m altitude, which provide me with a lot of red cell units. Passing Potosi (highest big town in the world 4067 m) and many mines my route goes to Epizana, Cochabamba and finally La Paz. After a side trip to the jungle of Boliva, I will follow the lake Titicaca on its westside to Puno and onward to Cusco. For sure there will be a few days for climbing in the area of La Paz. Also Machu Picchu in Cusco is a must!

The following route through Peru and Equador with my final destination Quito is not planned yet…

Check out my route below (just be patient it takes a little while for the route line to load)
